About

Belinda Rast testified for the State about her overnight work caring for Libby Murdaugh and her observations of family visits during those shifts. She explained that caregivers commonly exchanged shifts and said she had been scheduled to work on June 7, 2021, but exchanged that shift with Shelley Smith.

Rast described Paul Murdaugh as a frequent and helpful visitor. By contrast, she estimated that Alex Murdaugh had visited during her normal overnight hours only six or seven times in roughly five years.

Rast recalled Alex and Maggie Murdaugh bringing donuts during a Sunday-night visit with Randolph Murdaugh, whose date she qualified as June 6, she thought. She said Randolph was asleep and was not awakened, and that he later expressed surprise about the visit.

On cross-examination, Rast acknowledged that she did not know the family's ordinary daytime visiting habits or what Alex and Maggie had done before arriving. She estimated that the visit occurred closer to 9 p.m. and lasted about 30 minutes. When defense counsel referenced her earlier SLED statement and questioned her description, she continued to characterize the visit as unusual rather than strange.

Summary

Belinda Rast maintained that Alex and Maggie Murdaugh's Sunday-night visit was unusual, placed it closer to 9 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, and described Libby Murdaugh's dementia and Paul's calming effect on her.

Highlights (2)

Quote“She does have dementia. Well, Alzheimer's, dementia, it is basically the same thing. It affects the body in the same way. At that time she could not walk, but we could pick her up and put her in a wheelchair, pivot her and take her and put her in the bed, and she could feed herself. But now she's deteriorated and she can't feed herself. She can't even give her self a drink of water.”— Belinda RastRast contrasted Libby Murdaugh's abilities in 2021 with her later deterioration, providing firsthand caregiving context.Open in transcript →Watch this moment ▶
Quote“Sometimes. Paul had a way of having a calming affect on her. He would always remind her of the past, you know, like, Grandma, you remember that whipping you gave me with that fly swat? Things like that.”— Belinda RastThe testimony describes Paul's relationship with his grandmother and the way he sometimes comforted her.Open in transcript →Watch this moment ▶
