What this is

The Alex Murdaugh Case Archive is a searchable edition of the 2023 South Carolina murder-trial record. The completed archive covers January 23 through March 3, 2023: 29 trial days, 347 proceedings, and 65,803 transcript lines.

The South Carolina Supreme Court ordered a new trial in May 2026. The site also tracks the retrial schedule, venue, major rulings, and source documents.

Primary source

Transcript text comes from the court-reporter-certified trial transcript filed in the South Carolina Supreme Court's Record on Appeal in State v. Richard Alexander Murdaugh, Appellate Case No. 2023-000392. The trial transcript spans Record on Appeal Volumes III through XV.

Those PDFs contain native searchable text. The transcript was extracted directly from that text, without OCR or speech recognition. The numbered links beside each transcript row are archive line numbers. Hovering or focusing one shows the retained reporter page and line for checking the filed PDF.

Three transcript ranges concerning Juror 785 remain under seal and are absent from the public body text. The archive labels those source gaps and does not infer or reconstruct the missing material.

Structure and supporting material

The filed transcript is reorganized into days, witness examinations, procedural proceedings, speakers, and stable archive line anchors. Page-spanning sentences are joined for readability; source citations remain attached to each archive line.

Summaries, people profiles, location descriptions, evidence entries, and selected moments are derived from the record with AI assistance and human review to help readers navigate the case: who someone is, what happened on a given day, and where a proceeding fits. They are not substitutes for the transcript and do not decide guilt, credibility, or legal merit.

Video synchronization

Public courtroom video is attached where a reliable source exists. Line-level timestamps are approximate seek points aligned to the transcript. They may drift during recesses, off-microphone speech, or edits in the public recording. The certified reporter page and line remain the text authority.

Accuracy and corrections

  • The HTML edition may contain extraction, structuring, attribution, linking, or editorial errors.
  • The public source omits sealed material and may itself contain reporter corrections or imperfections.
  • Retrial updates identify the court record, official statement, or cited report that supports them.
