The Case
Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were shot and killed at the family's Moselle property on June 7, 2021. South Carolina charged Alex Murdaugh with two counts of murder and two weapon offenses. At trial, prosecutors presented the kennel video, phone and vehicle data, firearms and crime-scene evidence, financial-misconduct evidence, and Murdaugh's recorded statements. Murdaugh denied killing his wife and son and testified in his own defense.
A Colleton County jury found Murdaugh guilty on all four counts on March 2, 2023, and the court imposed two consecutive life sentences. In May 2026, the South Carolina Supreme Court reversed the denial of his new-trial motion and ordered a new trial. The retrial is scheduled for April 5, 2027, before Judge Debra R. McCaslin and will be held outside Colleton County.
